Writing that Moves Me
This essay is about some type of writing that has moved me. I
picked this quote from Nicholas Sparks' book, The Notebook. This essay
elaborates on the quote and explains why it had such an effect on me as a
person.
“We sit silently and watch the world around us. This has taken a
lifetime to learn. It seems only the old are able to sit next to one another
and not say anything and still feel content. The young, brash and impatient,
must always break the silence. It is a waste, for silence is pure. Silence is
holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each
other can sit without speaking. This is the great paradox.” –Nicholas Sparks,
The Notebook.
This quote moves me because it is so truthful and desirable. Teenagers, most of
them anyway, have not found their certain person who they will spend the rest
of their lives with. With that in mind, it is harder for people to be
comfortable around people they haven’t known for a long time. We are afraid of
being judged by others, so being one hundred percent comfortable with someone
is not likely. Reading this quote and hearing it said in the movie gives me
goose bumps. It makes me desire a feeling like that. A feeling where you are so
comfortable with someone that talking is not necessary and it is more of a
distraction and kind of annoying compared to silence. Being able to hear the
other person’s breathing or heartbeat is sometimes more comforting than
actually hearing their voice. This is a feeling I am looking forward to
having in the future. A comfort level where you know everything about the other
person, so there is not anything left to talk about, nothing more is important
or interesting for that matter and I cannot wait for the day where I am at this
point.
When you go to visit your grandparents, it is probably really
quiet in the house unless you are the one making the noise or you are the one
they are talking to. This quote reminds me of my grandparents. My Grandfather
is a very quiet man and does not really speak very loud or much at all,
especially to my grandmother. It is not because he does not like her, it is
just because he is so comfortable with her that he does not have to say
anything. He does not really need to say anything unless it is a question such
as, “What is for dinner?” or “Have you seen my glasses?” These questions are
not very important and do not really take long to answer. It is not a really
significant conversation and that is ok. For them, it is great actually. Being
silent is kind of like another language. This language of silence makes talking
sound really boring. Getting to this point in my life, like my grandparents,
will make me so happy.
The structure of this quote is simple overall. Simple words and
short sentences make it such an easy quote to understand and relate to or
picture. This quote grabs your attention because it is a paradox. It even says
it in the quote. It makes us try and figure out what exactly it is talking
about. Once we do, it makes us enjoy what Nicholas Sparks is saying.
This quote moves me because I have seen what Nicholas Sparks is trying to
explain and it makes me want to have that feeling. It is short, simple, and too
the point, which is why I like it so much. Getting to the point in my
life where I am so comfortable with someone, like how my grandparents are, that
I do not have to physically speak to them, will make me so happy.
Inquiry Question Research
This shows what happens when people abuse drugs. Communication
can be impaired with the use of drugs and this website explains this.
This website talks about a test which shows the effects of
alcohol on the brain and language for a long period of time.
This website talks about diseases from alcohol abuse and
symptoms include speech impairment.
Inquiry Question and video example
IQ: How can drugs and/or alcohol effect your own speech and
ability to speak?
This video shows Mariah Carey's acceptance speech after
she's been drinking. She can't really focus on what she is saying. She has
trouble forming words and has difficulty speaking. This is an example of how
alcohol can effect your language.
Inquiry Question
Im still not sure about my inquiry question, so it might
be changing soon. The one for now is, "How can drugs and/or alcohol effect
your own speech and ability to speak?" Hopefully I will find a variety of
information about this topic and it will be interesting to other people
too.
This I Believe Essay
My "This I Believe" essay
is about being able to speak your mind and expressing your feelings without
feeling like you are wrong. Writing this assignment was hard for me, but it was
a fun process. It got me to figure out something I feel strongly about and Im
glad I finally got it done.
Speak Your Mind
I believe you should never apologize for the way you feel.
Everyone has a right to their own feelings and being able to
express them is such a blessing. Everyone has a voice and it should be heard.
Stand up for yourself and everyone around you. In my life, I was
told that if someone offended me, I should tell them. This way, the person knew
how I felt and wouldn’t say or do it again. That seemed simple enough. It
worked perfectly until one conversation I had with a friend. He was a great
friend and had completely understood me before. During this conversation, we
had come up on the topic of racecar drivers. I told him that if I could
have any job I wanted, a racecar driver would be something on my list. He told
me that that was the stupidest thing he had ever heard and laughed. “That is a
man’s job, no girl could ever do that, or do it well.” It hurt my feelings that
just because I am a woman, it would mean I couldn’t do something, even
something that I could just dream about. I told him that he couldn’t tell me
what I could and couldn’t do; I could do anything I set my mind to. He told me
I was wrong for feeling that way and for picking that kind of “dream job”.
“You should apologize for getting upset, because I am the one who is
right.”
That response was not the one I thought I was going to get and
it made me mad. I thought, “How can the way I am feeling, be wrong? How can a
feeling in general be ‘wrong’?” Is it wrong because I do not feel the same way
he does about a topic? Is the way I feel below his feelings? Absolutely not.
People cannot be right or wrong because of the way they feel.
Opinions and feelings go hand in hand with each other. Everyone is entitled to
their own opinion and express them every day. Sometimes I do not particularly
agree with what they are saying to me and that’s fine. It just means we do not believe
in the same things. I would never make someone apologize for the way they feel
about a topic, even if it is different from mine. It’s good for others to have
different opinions and feelings towards issues and it doesn’t make them wrong
for expressing them. We should learn to respect others’ opinions.
I am my own person and I am allowed to feel however I
want. It is great that my friend and I have different opinions on things, but
trying to make someone apologize for it is wrong. I will never again let others
hurt me because of the way I feel. I will never again be defined by what others
make me. And I will never apologize for the way I feel.
